Kickoff Meeting Photography and Linkedin Portraits

One of my clients was having their annual kickoff meeting at the Westfields Marriott in Chantilly, VA.  The meeting was unique in that they had about a half dozen of their younger consultants give five minute presentations and their sideshow had to be 20 slides with each slide showing on the screen for 15 seconds.  This ensured that every presentation was sharp, focused, and to the point.  It really seemed to work well, the audience was very attentive and seemed to enjoy the format.

Since we had most of the employees of the consulting firm at the meeting, the marketing director had a great idea, setup a studio outside the meeting room in the lobby of the Westfields Marriott and allow people to get new headshots done for their Linkedin profile and for other internal uses.  Many of the "selfies" that employees use for their Linkedin profile tend to be a bit crude and not that professional looking.  I photographed 90 employees in less than 60 minutes while everyone was enjoying food and refreshments after the meeting.

Annual Report Executive / Group Photography Session in 20 Minutes

A local company that I work with was looking to update their executive portraits for their annual report.  They needed both individual and group portraits of the three top executives.  The executives were getting ready to release the year end numbers and prepare for their investor conference call, so we would only have them for a few minutes.

I went to their location the prior week and we took test shots and we decided on the locations and lighting for both the group and individual photographs.  The morning of the shoot I arrived two hours early to setup three different locations with the proper lighting.  We started the shoot at 10AM and we were done with all the photographs (both group and individual) by 10:20AM.  The executives were happy and we got the photographs we needed.

IDEA Personal Trainer Conference - Alexandria, VA

If you have been following my blog over the last few years you know I have been photographing the IDEA Health and Fitness Association's conferences in Washington, DC (Alexandria, VA) and in California (San Diego and LA) over the last four years.   I always look forward to these because they are so dynamic and enjoyable to photograph.  As you can see from the photographs, their is so much energy in these sessions, my job is to capture that energy via my photographs.

The challenge is always the same, the lighting stinks, the athletes are moving fast, and I try not to get myself killed as I run, lay on the floor, and get right next to trainers who are jumping and swinging.  But I wouldn't have it any other way ... this is much better than standing back with a long lens getting boring photographs.

IDEA sets aside one of the conference rooms at the hotel for what we call the "photo booth."  I bring a white backdrop and some studio lights and take photographs of some of the participants.  I spend about one hour a day over the two days in this on-site studio.  What is great it that the light is great and we have total control of what the athletes/trainers do.

You can read more about the IDEA World Conference in Anaheim, CA this August by going to the IDEA website found here.

Aspiring Actress Photo Shoot

The daughter of one my clients, Cassidy, was in need of some updated headshots for her acting career.  She is currently a student at a local university, but she has had a few small parts in TV shows and movies, and thinks that some day she might want to pursue acting fulltime.  Her agent asked that she get some new headshots so that he could more actively pursue some new roles for her.  It was really a fun photo shoot.  Cassidy was great in front of the camera.

Lincoln Memorial Washington, DC Engagement Photography

I received a call from Will a couple of months ago that he wanted to schedule an engagement photo shoot in Washington, DC around the National Mall area the weekend of February 14-16.  I didn't realize at the time that he hadn't proposed yet.  Will lives in Washington, DC and his fiance, Spring, lives in Oklahoma.  As you can see from the photographs, she said yes.  She was in town only for the weekend, so we had to do the engagement photo shoot regardless of  the weather.  Washington had a major snow storm on February 13th, and the weather for the weekend wasn't much better.  It was raining off and on, but we made the most of it and ended up with some great photographs.

High Tech in the Midwest - Scholar Magazine Cover Story Photo Shoot

We traveled to Grand Rapids, MI to do the cover story / photo shoot for Strayer University's Winter 2014 edition of their Scholar Magazine.  We arrived the night before the shoot and to my surprise Grand Rapids was a very attractive city.  The cover story was about Keith Brophy, CEO of Ideomed, a mobile application development company that allows patients to input daily health data that is shared with a case manager to help better manage chronic health conditions.

Keith's company is headquartered in a restored building that was built in 1904 by the Wolverine Brass Company.  The building provided a great backdrop for the photography.  We arrived at the building around 8:00AM to give ourselves a couple of hours to scout the building for the best settings for the photographs. All of the photographs required some level of artificial / strobe lighting.  We try to blend our lighting with the environment to make it look as natural as possible.

To minimize the amount of time the executive has to spend with us, we get the lights ready and have the shot all framed out and tested.  My assistant stands in to make sure the lighting is just right.  My Nikon D4 is tethered wireless into an Apple Ipad that is used by the Strayer Managing Editor to review and approve the shot.  We then ask the executive, in this case it was Keith, to pop into position and we do about 10 minutes of shooting and the we send him back to his office to resume his day and then setup for the next shot.  We did a total of six different photographs / settings.  It took us about four hours from start to finish and Keith only had to spend about sixty minutes of his day for the entire shoot.

We were packed up and ready to go for a late lunch by 2:00PM.   We went to a very nice wine bar down the street to relax and celebrate with the client.  The wine was excellent and the hamburger was out of this world. Great way to end the day.  We flew back to Washington, DC that night.

Dynamic Washington, DC K Street Photography

A firm in Washington, DC asked me to take environmental photographs of three of their executives.  We met in their lobby which was located on K Street in Washington, DC.  We took some very nice portraits of them in the lobby that were just want they asked for.  Before we finished I asked them if they had a few minutes to take some fun photos outside their building.  If these didn't turn out, no problem, we already took the photos that they wanted.  If they did turn out, they had something different and dynamic photographs.

The first image below is the photo we took outside.  I had the three executives walk towards me while I was on the ground.  This took maybe five minutes.  We all had a lot of fun doing it and we got a great photograph from it, well worth the five minute investment.

Combining Studio and Environmental Executive Portrait Sessions

I recently photographed 37 executives at a Chantilly, VA technology firm.  They wanted both studio portraits and environmental portraits.   The studio portraits were to be shot on a white background so they could easily extract the executive from the photo and put them into marketing materials.  Many of the executives give presentations and speeches to various trade associations and customer forums and are asked to provide a photograph to go along with each persons bio.  So it is nice to have a large variety for everybody so that they don't keep using the same photograph over and over again.

We setup a studio in a conference room on the first floor and we shot the environmental portraits right outside the conference room.   We budgeted 15 minutes per person.  We photographed some with and without ties and with and without sport coats.  Depending on the nature of the use of the photograph the client can choose a more formal shot with suit and tie, or go for the photograph with a more casual look.

The project was done over three days, two days one week and another day three weeks later to accommodate everyone's schedule.

PHOTOGRAPHER INFORMATION:

The studio photographs were done on my Nikon D4 with a Nikon 70-200MM F2.8 with Paul Buff Einstein strobes providing the light.  The environmental photographs were take with a Nikon D3S with a Nikon 105MM F2.8 lens.  I used the 26 inch Westcott Rapid Box Octa Kit with Beauty Dish Deflector Plate for my environmental lighting.  It was powered by my Nikon SB800 and controlled by my Nikon SB900 on my camera. I was in manual mode the entire time with both my camera and the SB800.

Simple, Sophisticated, Classic Executive Portraits

I never tire of the classic executive portrait with a grey background, simple lighting, classic pose, and a great expression.  Whether it is in black and white or color, whether it is a tight head-shot or full length, the look is always simple and classic.

North American Gas Forum Event in Washington, DC

The North American Gas Forum 2013 had almost 200 industry leaders in Washington DC for unique dialogue and two days of first-hand insights, information and knowledge exchange about the natural gas industry.  I was asked the photograph the two day event last October.

When I photograph these events you have to ask yourself as a photographer is how is the client going to use the images, and what do they want their clients to get from this event.  So in the case of this event the client was going to use the photos to promote the same event for 2014.  The client wants prospective clients to see that they have industry leading speakers, the event is very interactive, there is a lot of networking among attendees, and that their is plenty of downtime time to informally chat with other attendees.

I also realize that clients want some abstract photos for their websites and marketing materials.  The first photo below of a closeup of the microphone.  This photo is now being used by Energy Dialagues, the company the produces the event, on their home page.
