Be Our Guest - Philippa Hughes

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Philippa Hughes while taking her portrait for The Washington Post. A former lawyer, Philippa has left the law offices behind and pursues her true passion, Art. She conducts / coordinates art shows throughout the DC area. The story is about how Washington, DC residents are getting ready for out of town guests for the holidays and the inauguration. Philippa had her guest room walls torn down in favor of a larger living area. Her couch folds down into a bed for those times that guests do arrive. The Conference Board Summit Meeting

Given the state of the economy and stock market, I was really looking forward to photographing The Conference Board's Summit in Wilmington, DE on Governance in Highly Volatile Times. It is fascinating to hear from executives who are members of a number of Fortune 500 Board or Directors and how they view the current economic crisis. It made for some lively discussion and some great photographs.

Tariye and Demola's Engagement Photographs

Tariye and Demola are engaged to be married in their home country of Nigeria this coming April. Fortunately for me, Tariye found my name on the internet and we talked long distance while she was in Nigeria and scheduled an engagement photo session while she and her fiance were in town in early December. They have visited Washington, DC quite a few times and really liked Union Station and DuPont Circle. So we ran around town and took a series of engagement photographs in those areas. They actually met up at Harvard University, but now make their home in Nigeria.

Super Lawyer Stephen Kohn

Stephen Kohn is one of the nation’s foremost experts in whistleblower protection law and the author of the first legal treatise on whistleblowing. I had the pleasure to meet him while taking his photo for Super Lawyers Magazine.

Many of his court victories have become landmark precedents in modern workplace law, establishing the employee’s right to free speech under the First Amendment. A respected scholar as well as a litigator, he has testified in Congress on behalf of whistleblowers and worked with the Senate Judiciary staff to draft corporate whistleblower protections under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Perhaps his most famous client was Linda Tripp, who he represented in her successful lawsuit against the federal government for illegally releasing her work record.

Beyond Dragons: An East-West Fusion of Interior Design

I photographed for The Washington Post The Women's Committee for the National Symphony Orchestra annual design event - "Beyond Dragons: An East-West Fusion of Interior Design" features Asian-inspired spaces and room vignettes created by many of the area's top young designers. TKF Labyrinths in Georgetown and on the Roof Top

I have been taking pictures of Peace Gardens for the TKF Foundation (www.tkffdn.org) for the last two years. The Peace Gardens are areas where one can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living, and spend some time alone with your inner thoughts. Two new gardens/labyrinths just opened in DC. One is on top of the American Psychological Association/World Resources Institute at 10 G Street, NE and the other is by 32nd and K Street, NW in Georgetown.

White House Squirrels

When The Washington Post asked me to take photographs of squirrels around The White House and Lafayette Park, I wasn't sure what to expect. The first thing I did was to go up to security and let them know what I was doing, running around the front of The White House with big cameras and lenses can look suspicious. I will say that those critters are fast and you had to keep one step in front of them if you expect to take their pictures. I am always looking for something different to photograph, and this definitely fit the bill.

Women In Government Breast Cancer Summit

The Women in Government held their Breast Cancer Summit meeting at the Fairmont Hotel and their subsequent "Celebrating Survivorship" dinner at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, DC. Lance Armstrong's mother, Linda Armstrong Kelly, was one of the speakers along with Deborah Morosini, the sister of the late Dana Reeve (Christopher Reeve's wife). I had the pleasure of photographing the event and to listen to some very brave and heart touching stories. It was a great day and evening.

Will Bike for Food

Last year Lara Sheets, 26, Liz Tylander, 25, and Kat Shiffler, 24, biked from Mount Pleasant to Montreal. Along the way they visited inner-city gardens, innovative suburban farms and rooftop vegetable plots as they chronicled a grass-roots movement seeking to change the way we put food on our table.

The result is a low-budget documentary, "Garden Cycles Bike Tour," which captures the spirit of their unusual 2,000-mile sojourn and the much larger movement that inspired it. The trip has also generated a Web site and blog, http://womensgardencycles.wordpress.com.

I was with Adrian Higgins of The Washington Post when he interviewed them for a story on this new trend. See the entire article by clicking on the title above.

Susan and Jon's Engagement Photos at Mt. Vernon

I will be photographing Jon and Susan's wedding this fall. We went out to Mount Vernon and took some great engagement photographs. Mount Vernon provides a great backdrop for engagement photos. You have George Washington's home, of course, but you also have the Potomac, stables, and some beautiful gardens.
