North American Gas Forum Event in Washington, DC

The North American Gas Forum 2013 had almost 200 industry leaders in Washington DC for unique dialogue and two days of first-hand insights, information and knowledge exchange about the natural gas industry.  I was asked the photograph the two day event last October.

When I photograph these events you have to ask yourself as a photographer is how is the client going to use the images, and what do they want their clients to get from this event.  So in the case of this event the client was going to use the photos to promote the same event for 2014.  The client wants prospective clients to see that they have industry leading speakers, the event is very interactive, there is a lot of networking among attendees, and that their is plenty of downtime time to informally chat with other attendees.

I also realize that clients want some abstract photos for their websites and marketing materials.  The first photo below of a closeup of the microphone.  This photo is now being used by Energy Dialagues, the company the produces the event, on their home page.

Book Signing Event Photography at the National Press Club

I was asked to photograph the book launch of 'Abuse of Discretion' by Clarke D. Forsythe at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on October 2, 2013.  I had a brief chance to talk to Clarke, he seemed to be a very bright lawyer and very passionate about the topic of his book which looks at the behind-the-scenes deliberations that went into the Supreme Court’s abortion decisions from 1971 to 1973.

PHOTOGRAPHER INFORATION:

The room that the event was held was packed and they were videotaping the event.  Whenever I photograph an event that is being videotaped I try not to use flash because it screws up the video cameras.  Fortunately, the video company had brought plenty of lighting so that wasn't a problem.  As with most events I photograph, I used two cameras, my Nikon D4 and my Nikon D3S.  The D4 had my Nikon 70-200MM F2.8 and the Nikon D3S had either my Nikon 24-70MM F2.8 or my Nikon 14-24MM F2.8 lens.  Between the packed room and trying to make sure I wasn't in the video, it made walking around the room a little tricky.  I try to move around a venue like this to get as many interesting angles as I can.

Rebecca Shambaugh's Book Launch Event at the Kennedy Center | Washington, DC Photographer

Rebecca Shambaugh launched her 3rd book, Make Room for Her: Why Companies Need an Integrated Leadership Model to Achieve Extraordinary Results at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts | Washington DC on January 29, 2013.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rebecca when I took her portrait for her book cover.  She asked me to photograph her book launch event at the Kennedy Center.  Rebecca makes the point that women bring different perspectives, feelings, and experiences that are unique to women and that add value to almost any business discussion.  Corporations that do not take advantage of these unique traits are doing themselves a disfavour.  Given that I have worked with women my entire career, and I live with four women, I couldn't agree more.

Rebecca spoke on the Integrated Leadership Model and why it's essential for today's organizations and their leaders. She maintains that while current leadership models aren't necessarily "broken," they won't drive success in today's challenging and competitive global marketplace.

The event included a musical performance by the National Symphony Orchestra's Youth Fellows as well as the following distinguished guest speakers:

  • Kathleen MatthewsExecutive Vice President of Global Communications and Public Affairs, Marriott International
  • Bill RichardsonExecutive Vice President of Global Business Development, PPD
  • Dottie BrienzaChief Diversity Officer and Head of Talent Development, Merck
  • Anne AltmanGeneral Manager, Global Public Sector, IBM
  • Dr. Christine DingivanChief Medical Officer, PPD

DC Eaters / Mintwood Restaurant Event - Washington, DC Event Photographer

On Monday night, June 11th,  100 lucky Eater readers gathered at the Adams Morgan hotspot Mintwood Place in celebration of the launch of CityEats, the newest online destination for restaurant reservations. iPads were on-site for guests to book tables directly through CityEats, while a crew of celebrated chefs turned out an exclusive tasting. Some highlights? Beef cheek sliders from Tim Ma (Maple Ave); chilled spring Irish pea soup from Ryan Miller (Virtue Feed & Grain); braised lamb shank sliders from Jeremy Kermisch (Granville Moore's); Todd Gray's (Equinox) watermelon and arugula salad; and bacon & onion flammekueche from Mintwood Place's own Cedric Maupillier

I had the pleasure of photographing the event and tasting some of the delicious food.

New York Waldorf Astoria Conference / Event | Washington, DC Event Photographer

New York's Waldorf Astoria is a great environment for a business conference.   My client asked me to photograph the event and try to capture all the dynamics of the conference.  These conferences are more than just a transfer of information from the speakers to the attendees, but it is a dynamic give and take of ideas between attendees and subject matter experts.  Contacts get made, new ideas get shared, and everyone leaves with new ideas to take back to their companies and hopefully do things in better and more creative ways.

I always learn some fascinating things when I photograph these events.  One thing that stood out was the idea of reverse mentoring.  The speed of change is so rapid that it is hard for older executives to keep up with the new technologies and behavior patterns of younger customers.  So they get mentored by younger staff members who have grown up in this new age. The other thing was how major change use to occur over a generation, now major change is occurring every six years.

IDEA Trainer Institute - Alexandria, VA | VA Photographer

IDEA Personal Trainer Institute is a diverse and cutting-edge educational program / conference exclusively for personal trainers. They held it this year at the Hilton in Alexandria, VA.  This is the third IDEA conference that I have photographed, and there is never a dull moment.

There are a number of classroom setting sessions, but the majority of the sessions are very interactive and are lead by some of the top training instructors in the world such as Todd Durkin who trains professional athletes like Aaron Rogers (QB of the Green Bay Packers) and Drew Brees (QB of the New Orleans Saints).  We also setup a little studio onsite and bring in some of the attendees to demonstrate various exercises and routines.

Spy Museum Event in Washington, DC | Washington DC Photographer

One of my client's was hosting a party for their clients at the Spy Museum in Washington, DC.  To spice it up they brought in some actors to play the parts of James Bond and Austin Powers.  The also had the "Bond Girl" in her beautiful red dress as well as an actor playing the role of a polygraph (lie detector) examiner.  It made for a very lively and entertaining evening.  The guests were also able to tour the Spy Museum.  No photos were  allowed in the museum so the event photographer, yours truly, was not allowed in that part of the museum.

IDEA Personal Trainer Institute - Alexandria, VA Hilton | VA Photographer

I had the pleasure of photographing the IDEA Personal Trainer Institute at the Alexandria, VA Hilton this past weekend.  The event brings a limited number of personal trainers together with world-class presenters and industry experts for an intense, hands-on, interactive experience. Every session is designed to go beyond the usual workshop with an extended time length (most sessions are 2–3 hours), in-depth information, and small class size focusing on the best and latest ideas and techniques that will create more success for the trainers' training programs.

Topics included: specific training techniques to improve agility, speed and explosiveness; standardized performance assessment systems; the science behind proper recovery; improving biomechanics in golfers; nutrition for energy; and enhanced performance and tips for training triathletes.

I try to work out at the gym three times a week.  I use the good old fashioned weights, machines, and ellipticals. It was interesting to see that almost all the programs do NOT involve weights or machines, they call it Body Leverage Training. This hot training area focuses on planar training, the science of suspension training, and new tools and techniques for using body weight as resistance.

I tried to pick up a few tips while photographing the various sessions.  The one thing that seemed to underline the entire event / conference was the inspiration and motivation that the trainers get while attending this power packed conference.  The had some well know trainers' as instructors: Todd Durkin, Sherri McMillan, Fraser Quelch, Gary Gray, and Fabio Comana.
