Combining Studio and Environmental Executive Portrait Sessions

I recently photographed 37 executives at a Chantilly, VA technology firm.  They wanted both studio portraits and environmental portraits.   The studio portraits were to be shot on a white background so they could easily extract the executive from the photo and put them into marketing materials.  Many of the executives give presentations and speeches to various trade associations and customer forums and are asked to provide a photograph to go along with each persons bio.  So it is nice to have a large variety for everybody so that they don't keep using the same photograph over and over again.

We setup a studio in a conference room on the first floor and we shot the environmental portraits right outside the conference room.   We budgeted 15 minutes per person.  We photographed some with and without ties and with and without sport coats.  Depending on the nature of the use of the photograph the client can choose a more formal shot with suit and tie, or go for the photograph with a more casual look.

The project was done over three days, two days one week and another day three weeks later to accommodate everyone's schedule.

PHOTOGRAPHER INFORMATION:

The studio photographs were done on my Nikon D4 with a Nikon 70-200MM F2.8 with Paul Buff Einstein strobes providing the light.  The environmental photographs were take with a Nikon D3S with a Nikon 105MM F2.8 lens.  I used the 26 inch Westcott Rapid Box Octa Kit with Beauty Dish Deflector Plate for my environmental lighting.  It was powered by my Nikon SB800 and controlled by my Nikon SB900 on my camera. I was in manual mode the entire time with both my camera and the SB800.

Environmental Executive Portraits / Headshots

About two out of three executive portraits that I do are in an "environmental" setting.  That is they are photographed in or around the executive's office.  Many times clients don't think their office environment is suitable for a background.  Using selective focus you can take light, lines, and color to make some very interesting backgrounds out of some pretty mundane environemnts.

One Year Anniversary Photographs in Georgetown - Washington, DC Photographer

Chris and Josh were married last year on a tropical island.  Their wedding photographer did an okay job, but they wanted some really nice photos of the two of them.  They live out of town currently, but are from the Washington, DC area and they were in town for a few days and wanted the photographs to have a DC theme to them.  We discussed a few ideas and decided on Georgetown as our backdrop.  Even though I have been a photographer in the Washington, DC area for a number of years, I haven't done a lot of photography in Georgetown.

We walked around Georgetown for about 90 minutes and just stopping at places that had interesting light or overall character that we thought would make for a nice portrait.  Chis and Josh are a wonderful couple, they were a pleasure to spend some time with, and Georgetown provided a wonderful environment for our pictures.

Senior Portraits

A Penn State college friend of mine who lives in York, PA asked if I could come up to York and take some senior portraits of his senior high school daughter.  Needless to say, I was flattered and honored to do it.  They have a beautiful home and we were able to take all the photographs at their home.  The fact that his daughter is beautiful made my job very easy.

Carly and Tim Wedding Portraits at the Jefferson Memorial

Carly and Tim were married earlier in the day on this rainy day in September here in the Washington, DC area. They are both in the military and were only going to be in town a short while.  This was a week in Washington where it rained for five days straight and it was raining pretty hard on this  day.  But since it was their wedding day and we might not have a chance to do it again while they were in town we decided to roll the dice and go down to the Jefferson Memorial and take some photographs.

Other than a few sprinkles, we got pretty lucky with the weather.  On the plus side, the weather also kept the tourists away.  The photographs turned out great and they were able to get some nice photographs taken on their wedding day.  Oh by the way, as soon as I got into my car the clouds opened up and it poured.

Executive Portraits - Fairfax Chamber of Commerce

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the staff of the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce in Vienna, VA / Tysons Corner, VA.  Jim Corcoran is the newly hired CEO for the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce.   I have known Jim for over 24 years when we were neighbors in Rosemont, PA, outside of Philadelphia.

Jim wanted new portraits of his staff for their website and other marketing materials.  I went onsite at their Vienna, VA location and setup a portrait studio in one of their conference rooms.

Reston VA Executive Portraits / Headshots

As an environmental portrait photographer I quite often get asked to take pictures of  a group of executives at their office location.  The client wants unique photographs that don't have the typical canvas background.  And BTW you have about 15 to 20 minutes with each executive.  Having never scene the office before you have to hope that there is something interesting that you can use as backdrops other than a plain wall, and if  there is  a plain wall, you have to make it look interesting.

So I went to a local business here in Reston, VA to do four executive photographs in about an hour.  I got there an hour early to scout the building and test lighting.   As usual there was the mixture of tungsten, florescent, and daylight all over the place, so I had to figure how to filter my lights to match the environment.  That day was sunny and 90 degrees, so outside would be too harsh.  At the end of the day I was able to find a lot of natural light coming through windows that looked great, and I used my lights as fill.

The other variable you never know about is the mood of the executives.  It was at the end of the day and they can be  tired and ready to go home.  These guys  were great.  They were all very cooperative and we had a lot of fun with the photographs.   Having fun is probably the  single most important key to getting great executive portraits / headshots.   I was contracted to do four executives, but there were two additional executives there who needed their photographs taken as well.  I was having fun, we were in a groove, so I had no problem taking their photographs.
